Fin

This will be the final location. It is under a bridge near downtown Mount Clemens. No one around to possibly comment, but I thought the contrast of the bright yarn and dull rocks would look good.

I have enjoyed this. It is no longer what it was when it started, but I think that is a good thing. Part of what makes these kinds of projects interesting is to see how they evolve. I'm honestly not too surprised that no one was stopping to comment on this. Although I was expecting a little more of a reaction to a brightly colored pendulum. People just generally aren't interested in things of this nature. Is it too out of the ordinary? I'm not sure exactly what it is. Maybe I can come up with something else that will interest people more.

Here are the last pictures.

"What the Hell?"

Today I took the sculpture to Wilson Park. It's the only decent location for this within walking distance. Getting rides is getting to be harder with both of my parents working late and my friends working all the time.

When I was setting this up I saw a kid that couldn't have been much older than 7 look at it and say, "What the hell?" Maybe there is still hope for getting people's reactions to this. Although, other than that comment, I still don't have any reason to hope.

Riverbend

This project has kind of evolved into something new.
Moving this thing around was getting difficult and messy, so I decided to disassemble it. I also realzed that people just aren't interested in it. Now I'll be taking the parts of the original sculpture around to different locations, setting them up, and taking pictures of that. Here is the first one like that, at Riverbend Park.

Broken Weather

I'm not just sitting around doing nothing with this project. I just don't think there is any point to doing this while it is still cold outside. I don't think people are going to stop and look at a sculpture if they're in a hurry to get inside. As soon as the weather improves I'll be starting this up again.

The First

Today I took the sculpture to Macomb Mall. As I expected, people don't do much more than glance at it as they pass. The strongest response came from security, who visited me twice. The first man of great power said it was fine and that I could keep doing what
I was doing. The second, who came about 20 minutes later, told me that his boss claimed it was "Messing up the atmosphere of the mall."

Getting pictures of the very brief glaces was difficult. I'm guessing I will get a little better as this
project goes on. Most pictures were just of people walking near it. I'm hoping to get some more photogenic reactions.

The lack of reaction is somewhat surprising. Not that I expect everyone to stop and stare at it, but I would think that you'd be more curious about this yarn pyramid than how your fingernails are looking.

The reactions:

Returned

I now have the sculpture back in my possesion. Due to issues with transportability I had to alter it a bit. I think I may like it better this way.

My cat seems to appreciate it.

My guess is that my cat will pay more attention to it that humans.

Change of Plans

Thanks to my health, I am now being tutored from home. I've come up with a different, yet fairly similar senior project to do. I am still going to be using a sculpture in public places and documenting reactions to it. The sculpture is a piece I recently had in the Mount Clemens art center. I plan on taking it around to different locations like elementary schools, nursing homes, college campuses, etc. and taking pictures of how people respond to it.

The sculpture has been sitting in my friend's garage for a while, and getting it has proven to be more difficult that I had anticipated. Due to conflicting schedules and a locked garage, I haven't been able to get it yet. Today might be the day, though.

The sculture is also pretty difficult to move because it is made mostly of yarn.

This is the sculpture I will be using.
